Why Getting Involved in Co-curricular Activities Matter
Academic Achievement
Participation in co-curricular activities enhances academic achievement by forming the whole child and strengthening the habits that support success in the classroom. Students develop essential executive functioning skills such as time management, organization, and goal setting as they balance responsibilities, while increased engagement in school fosters motivation, better attendance, and a deeper commitment to learning. Through athletics, arts, and clubs, students build discipline, perseverance, and resilience—qualities that translate directly into academic growth—while also applying classroom knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts. Additionally, these experiences nurture confidence and collaboration, creating students who are more focused, capable, and prepared to excel academically and contribute positively to their community.
Social and Emotional Development
Co-Curricular activities play vital roles in social-emotional development by providing students with opportunities to build meaningful relationships, develop self-confidence, and practice essential interpersonal skills in a supportive environment. Through collaboration in teams, clubs, and shared experiences, students learn communication, empathy, and conflict resolution while gaining a sense of belonging and connection to their school community. These activities also foster resilience and emotional regulation as students navigate challenges, receive feedback, and grow from both successes and setbacks. In this way, after-school involvement helps form students who are not only socially aware and emotionally grounded, but also better prepared to lead, serve, and thrive within a Christ-centered community.
Future Success
Participation in co-curricular activities contributes significantly to students’ future success by helping them develop the character, skills, and experiences necessary to thrive beyond the classroom. Through consistent involvement, students cultivate leadership, responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities highly valued in high school, college, and future careers. These experiences also encourage initiative, adaptability, and a strong work ethic, while providing opportunities to explore interests and discover personal strengths. In a Catholic school context, such formation prepares students not only for academic and professional achievement, but also to live with purpose, lead with integrity, and serve others faithfully in their communities.

At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School, our Mock Trial program offers students in grades 5–8 a dynamic opportunity to grow as confident communicators, critical thinkers, and ethical leaders. Through this engaging co-curricular activity, students step into the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and jurors, learning the foundations of legal reasoning, public speaking, and collaborative problem-solving.
Rooted in our commitment to forming the whole child, Mock Trial challenges students to analyze complex situations, articulate thoughtful arguments, and uphold principles of truth and justice. Participants develop poise and confidence as they present cases, question witnesses, and work as a team—all within a supportive and faith-centered environment.
Aligned with our mission and the Educational Model of the Company of Mary, this program fosters intellectual curiosity while nurturing virtues such as integrity, respect, and responsibility. Students are encouraged to seek truth, listen with empathy, and engage in meaningful dialogue—skills that extend far beyond the courtroom.
Whether your child is passionate about debate, interested in law, or simply eager to try something new, Mock Trial provides a meaningful and enriching experience that prepares students for future academic success and faithful leadership in the world.
While families may choose from many Catholic parishes as their spiritual home, Saint Thomas More Catholic Church is where the majority of our school families worship. Located a short distance from Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac, we warmly encourage all families to actively participate in parish life, embracing their role as the primary spiritual leaders within their homes.
