Library Center

The Katherine Lam Library Center is like a dream that has no conclusion, but all kinds of expanding episodes, as when you wake up with a half-baked dream that you expect to continue the next time you go to sleep. What is unique about this never-ending dream is that it has become a collaborative process.

In 1963, two years after Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac in Tustin opened its doors to 17 pre-school and kindergarten children, once they were ready to embark on a totally serious and organized learning experience, the sisters and parents dream of a library. So, the ever-ready Home and School Association provides a cash allocation to begin the first phase of a library, and one of the parent “dreamers”, Katherine Lam initiates her long-term volunteer service as librarian, which is memorialized in the name of the library.

Six years later, a new dream-come-true: the expansion of the square footage of the library and the addition of books, media equipment and materials to furnish it as the media center in which the students would find the necessary site for the growing wealth of supplemental information being added to the traditional curricula via computing, television, and audio-visual means of enhancing classroom instruction.

The “dream come true” trajectory continues with the far-reaching views of our administrators and the cutting-edge approach of teachers, parents, and librarians equally competent as Mrs. Lam, namely Elly Young up to 1991, and Catherine Zimmerman, our present Library Center Coordinator.
