What Leads to Success?

Academic Development

The 1st–8th grade years are a critical period for academic development, building the knowledge, skills, and habits that prepare students for success in high school and beyond. During this stage, learners engage in increasingly structured, intentional, and rigorous academic experiences that support both depth of understanding and independent thinking.

At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School, our 1st–8th grade program fosters growth across core academic areas, including language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and the integration of faith across all disciplines. Students strengthen reading comprehension, expand vocabulary, develop strong writing skills, and learn to analyze and communicate ideas effectively. In mathematics, they progress from foundational number fluency to more advanced concepts such as operations, fractions, ratios, algebraic thinking, and problem-solving, supported by hands-on and application-based learning experiences.

Students are also taught how to learn well. They develop executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, perseverance, and responsibility. Through collaborative projects, structured routines, and meaningful feedback, students learn to set goals, reflect on their progress, and take ownership of their learning.

By the time students complete 8th grade, they are academically prepared for the challenges of high school, equipped with strong foundational knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the confidence to learn, lead, and serve in alignment with our Catholic mission.

Social-Emotional Development

The 1st–8th grade years are a vital time for social and emotional development, as students grow in self-awareness, deepen relationships, and learn to navigate more complex social and academic environments. These formative years shape their confidence, sense of identity, and ability to engage positively and responsibly with others.

At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School, we intentionally foster a safe, supportive, and faith-filled community where every student is known, valued, and accompanied. Students learn to recognize and express emotions in healthy ways, practice empathy, and develop respect for diverse perspectives. Through classroom collaboration, service opportunities, and daily interactions, they strengthen communication skills, learn to resolve conflicts constructively, and build habits of cooperation and mutual support.

Grounded in our Catholic identity, we form students in virtues such as kindness, integrity, responsibility, and compassion. They are guided to reflect on their choices, understand the impact of their actions, and grow through accountability and reconciliation. This ongoing formation nurtures self-discipline, resilience, and a strong moral compass rooted in faith.

By supporting social-emotional growth across 1st–8th grade, we prepare students to be confident, compassionate, and faith-centered young people who are ready to lead, serve, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Future Success

Students in 1st–8th grade who engage in a structured, faith-centered academic environment experience formation of the whole person—academically, socially, and emotionally. Through consistent routines, intentional instruction, and collaborative learning experiences, they develop strong foundational knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others.

Within this environment, students are guided to take ownership of their learning, set meaningful goals, and grow in perseverance and responsibility. They build confidence as readers, writers, problem-solvers, and communicators, while also developing the executive functioning skills needed for success in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Rooted in our Catholic identity, students also grow in purpose and virtue. They learn to lead with compassion, act with integrity, and serve others with a spirit of generosity. This integration of academic excellence and character formation helps students develop habits that support lifelong learning and faithful discipleship.

For students who are new to a structured academic setting, we provide intentional support, care, and guidance to ensure a smooth and confident transition into our learning community, meeting each child where they are and helping them grow with confidence and success.
