Early Childhood Enrollment
Why Preschool and Prekindergarten Matters for Kindergarten Success
Academic Development
The preschool and prekindergarten years are a critical window for academic development, laying the groundwork for future success in elementary school and beyond. During this time, children develop essential readiness skills through structured, intentional, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School, our early childhood program fosters growth in key academic areas, including language development, early literacy, and foundational mathematics. Students build vocabulary, practice listening and speaking skills, and are introduced to phonemic awareness and early reading concepts. In mathematics, they explore number sense, patterns, sorting, and problem-solving through hands-on activities that encourage critical thinking.
Equally important, children learn how to learn. They develop focus, follow routines, engage in cooperative learning, and respond to guidance and feedback—skills that are essential for long-term academic success. Through a balanced approach that integrates play with purposeful instruction, we cultivate curiosity, independence, and a strong academic foundation.
By the time students complete prekindergarten, they are not only prepared for the expectations of kindergarten, but are confident, engaged learners equipped with the skills and habits needed to thrive.
Social-Emotional Development
The preschool and prekindergarten years are a vital time for social and emotional growth, as children begin to understand themselves, build relationships, and learn how to navigate the world around them. These early experiences shape a child’s confidence, sense of belonging, and ability to interact positively with others.
At Saint Jeanne de Lestonnac Catholic School, we intentionally cultivate a nurturing, faith-filled environment where every child is known, valued, and loved. Students learn to express their feelings appropriately, practice patience, and develop empathy and respect for others. Through guided interactions, collaborative play, and consistent routines, children build strong relationship skills—learning to share, cooperate, resolve conflicts, and support one another.
Rooted in our Catholic identity, we emphasize virtues such as kindness, gratitude, and responsibility. Children are encouraged to recognize their actions, make thoughtful choices, and grow from guidance and reflection. This formation helps them develop self-awareness, self-control, and resilience—skills that are essential not only for school success, but for life.
By fostering a strong social-emotional foundation, we prepare our youngest learners to enter kindergarten with confidence, compassion, and the ability to thrive within a joyful and supportive community.
Future Success
Children who participate in a structured preschool and prekindergarten program experience formation of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. With early exposure to routines, foundational skills, and guided interaction, they enter kindergarten ready to take initiative, think critically, and collaborate with confidence.
Grounded in a faith-centered environment, they also begin to develop a sense of purpose, compassion, and responsibility that shapes how they learn and relate to others. This integrated foundation not only supports a smooth and successful transition into kindergarten, but also nurtures habits and virtues that help them grow, serve, and thrive in the years ahead.
However, if kindergarten will be their first experience with a structured learning environment, we are here to support each child with care, patience, and intentional guidance to ensure a strong and confident start to their love of learning.
